How to Start the Day with Peace and Intention
When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive—to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. — Marcus Aurelius
Before you know it, school will be back in session, and mornings will once again be filled with the hustle and bustle of everyone getting ready to head out the door. But what might mornings look like if you got up a little earlier and made time for yourself, before the day and everyone around you started clamoring for your attention? Mornings don’t necessarily have to feel rushed or chaotic. They can become a sacred space—a quiet invitation to reconnect with yourself before the noise of the world begins. By embracing a few simple, soulful rituals, you can transform the way you greet each new day. Whether your mornings are currently filled with to-do lists or tired yawns, these gentle practices offer a chance to slow down, breathe deeply, and start the day with peace and intention.
My mornings lately have not been the soulful rituals I once embraced. I have fallen into tired old habits that don’t serve me well. So, I’m determined to incorporate the following into my morning routine as a way of starting my days with peace and intention. I hope you’ll join me as well!
1. Wake Without the World
Delay checking your phone immediately upon waking. Instead, light a candle or open a window. Start your day with presence and thankfulness that you’re alive to greet this brand new beautiful day!
2. Tea or Coffee as a Ceremony
Sip your morning drink slowly—notice the warmth, the aroma, and the steam rising from your cup or mug. Let it be more than caffeine. Let it be a moment of grounding.
3. One Gentle Word
Choose a word to guide your day: peace, courage, gratitude, soft or whatever word reasonates with you at that moment. Write it down. Carry it with you throughout the day.
4. Meditate
Take 5, 10 or 15 minutes to sit in silence, being present in the moment. Don’t clutter your mind thinking about everything you need to do today. Relax and breathe deeply.
I know mornings are probably far from peaceful and relaxed for most of you, but imagine if you got up a smidge earlier each day for this little ritual the difference it could make in your entire day. You might find you’re more calm and better equipped to handle life’s daily stressors.
I encourage you to give it a try because sometimes the smallest changes can have the biggest impact.
I welcome your comments and/or suggestions to add to the above list.
Gentle blessings,
Beth
